Title: Opposites Attract (1/?)
Author: redderz
Pairing: Nicholas/Danny
Rating: PG for swearing.
A/N: I know, I know… I haven’t finished my first fic, Just A Kiss yet. But I really have no ideas for that one anymore. ; ; I have quite a few for this one. Other pairings will include Andy/Andy and Wainwright/Angel. Mwahahaaaa.
Warnings: Swearing, slang gay term. I mean no offense.
Disclaimers: I own nothing, apart from the computer I used to write it. Hot Fuzz belongs to the Holy Trinity.
Length: 1,269 words

Nicholas Angel is a miserable, boring, self-centered prick with no sense of humor.

At least that’s what Detective Andy Wainwright thought.

Everyone else in the Sandford Police Service seemed to be slowly warming up to their new Sergeant (aside from Andy’s partner, Andy, but given the mood that Wainwright was in, it would be dangerous for Cartwright to disagree with him).
Tony, who had previously been very averse to having a ‘rival’ around, had taken to watching Nick’s every move – albeit discreetly – as if to try and pick up some tips.
With Doris it was inevitable - Angel is a good-looking bloke.
Bob had become slightly more coherent when speaking to Nick (though it was mostly still incomprehensible, but it was an improvement), and even Saxon would wag his bushy tail whenever he passed by.
Frank – well, he constantly praised Nicholas anyway. And Danny… that was another story entirely.

“They’re shagging.” Wainwright said bluntly, his nose wrinkling, “It’s obvious.”

Both he and Cartwright were sitting in their usual corner of the pub, pints on the table in front of them, cigarettes between fingers. Wainwright’s hazel eyes were focused on the table at the opposite end of the room where Nicholas and Danny were sitting.
Cartwright grunted and took a sip of the bitter liquid in his glass, his own eyes averting their gaze from the couple, to his partner, then back again.

The rumors about Danny and Nick’s relationship were rife around the headquarters, though no one could actually prove they were true.

The younger detective directed his gaze back at his partner again, who was still locked in a staring contest with the back of Nicholas’ head, as if he were mentally willing him to turn around; That or willing for Angel’s head to explode. Andy guessed that it was the latter as Wainwright’s eyes narrowed dangerously, and Cartwright glanced sideways, half expecting to find pieces of their Sergeant’s skull flying towards him.

“Look at ‘em., right pair of poofters.” Wainwright jibed again.

Cartwright’s upper lip curled into a sneer which he directed at the two oblivious men, before taking a drag from his cigarette, a thoughtful expression suddenly appearing on his face.

“’Ere, Andy? What if they’re not, though? Maybe they’re just having a drink together. Like we are.”

This statement caused Wainwright to finally break the death-stare and turn to look at his friend.

“What the fuck are you on about? Do they look like they’re ‘just having a quiet drink’?”

Both of the Andys turned their heads in a synchronized fashion back over to the direction of Nicholas and Danny’s table.
Danny was wearing his trademark goofy grin; Obviously Nick was talking about his work down in London, as usual. Danny’s eyes widened for a few seconds in amazement, before his hand moved to touch Nick’s arm briefly.

The two detectives looked back at each other again, and nodded, speaking at the same time.

The rest of their night was spent with Tony and Doris, who had arrived a little while later; Bob would have joined, but had gone to take Saxon for an evening walk.
The topic of the two ‘lovebirds’ was long forgotten as soon as Fisher had mentioned that he’s buying, and by the time the bell rang for last orders, they were all pretty hammered.
Danny seemed to have finally cracked that outer exterior of Angel’s too, as even he was slightly merry, a pint of lager in both hands as he headed back over to where Danny sat.

“This is the last one, Danny. We do have work tomorrow.” Nicholas smiled as he spoke, however, and Danny pretended to roll his eyes. “I know I know…. God, sometimes you sound just like my dad.” He grinned here.

“Well, your dad is a very respectful man… so I’ll take that as a compliment.”

The sound of drunken laughter was heard from the opposite side of the room, and Nicholas turned his head towards the noise, squinting over at the small group of officers. His gaze was met by the intense eyes of Wainwright, and Nick turned back towards the safe, warm eyes of his partner.

“Sounds like they’re havin’ a good time!” Danny smiled cheerfully. “Wanna join them?”

Nicholas shook his head at this, withdrawing into his shell once more. “I don’t fit in with them. Don’t you remember the last drink we had all together?”

There had been questions and conflicts, and although Nicholas was fine with the physical conflict asked of him by his job, personal, mental conflict was a lot harder for him to deal with.

“Oh come on, that was back then! They’re used to you now!”

Nick was unable to protest as Danny got to his feet surprisingly quickly and his free hand took hold of Nick’s, pulling him up out of the seat and over to the others.

Tony looked up at the two approaching officers with a smile, his glasses slightly askew. Doris giggled, her eyes sweeping over Nicholas, causing him to shift uncomfortably on the spot. The Andys’ line of sight was fixed firmly onto the clasped hands of Danny and Nick.

“Come to join us then, finally?” Fisher reached across and pulled a chair across from another table, gesturing for whomever to sit next to him.
Danny took him up on the offer and sat, releasing Nick’s hand so that he could grab a chair from elsewhere. Nicholas however, was contemplating the idea of leaving, unable to look anywhere else apart from at Danny.

“Nicholas, relax…”

The calming sound of Danny’s voice helped him to find a nearby chair and pull it closer, sitting down in between Danny and Wainwright, placing his drink down onto the table.

“We were starting to think that you thought you were too good to sit with us…” Fisher continued, eyeing Nicholas closely. Wainwright did the same, though from out of the corner of his eyes.

“Of course not.” Nicholas replied, feeling a little hot and bothered by all of the eyes on him.

“Yeah, we just wanted some privacy, thas’all.” Danny added, and at that point the Andys both let out a loud snort of laughter.

Nick flushed once more, feeling the skin on his neck burning. “Is something funny, detectives?” He tried to keep his cool, but felt a wave of dizziness wash over him, a mixture of heat, the smoky atmosphere and the effects of the alcohol stifling him, and he pushed himself up again, “Excuse me…” he murmured, before heading towards the door and out of the pub, not even giving the Andys a chance to reply.

“Nick…?” Danny turned in his seat to watch Nicholas leave, a concerned look on his face, before he stood up also and followed after his partner, mumbling a quick “See you tomorrow…” to his friends.

Nicholas leaned back against the wall, taking in great gulps of the fresh, cool, country air, his eyes tightly closed. He was not used to drinking, and he silently cursed himself for letting himself slip.
Moments later, the pub door opened and Danny stepped outside, seeing Nick just outside.

“Hey… are you all right? You look a bit shit.”

Trust Danny to say it like it is. Nicholas let out a soft laugh, nodding a little. “I just needed air. But… I think I’ll head home now, anyway.”

Danny nodded, reaching out a big hand to clap Nick gently on the shoulder. “You’re a lightweight.” He grinned. “Want me to walk you home?” The hand squeezed gently – affectionately, and Nick glanced down at it, before smiling.

“I’d like that.”

It looks like it's off to a good start. Wait, did I spy Wainwright/Angel in that pairing list? Hurry up and get to that! It's nice seeing a new pairing around these parts. I'd also love to see how that would work.

Intriguing so far -- I like that it's starting off before the end of the movie, since it seems like most fics take place sometime afterward. I like the exploration of the group dynamic. And I'm very curious as to how the Wainwright/Angel is going to come about! Can't wait for the next part.
