Title: Encounter at Cooper's Farm
Rating: PG at the most
Pairing: Nicholas/Danny
Summary: Nicholas finally notices something.
Author's Notes: Fluff. Fluffy fluff. Also, this is my first bit of fanfic ever, so comments of all sorts are very much welcome. I'm an American, so any corrections to my (probably quite awful) attempt at British English dialogue will be very graciously accepted. Oh, and I swear I didn't swipe the idea of the bull from that wonderful story about the Andies - this was a case of parallel invention. This story, short as it is, was brewing for quite a while.
Disclaimer: These characters do not belong to me, I'm sorry to say.

The day started off in a quite ordinary way – almost more ordinary than usual, in fact. It was so ordinary that Nicholas later felt he should’ve known something big was coming. Life-changing events so often wrapped themselves up in the comfortable camouflage of the humdrum. In this case, the disguise came in the form of a visit by Nicholas and Danny to Fred Cooper’s farm to investigate a report of a stolen wheelbarrow (probably them kids from up the road, Nancy Hill’s boys; that woman’s got no control over them boys).

On their walk up the hill from the car to the farmhouse, Nicholas spotted a break in the fence, and he and Danny approached it to investigate. Their inspection of the site was interrupted by the sound of heavy breathing nearby, and they looked up to find themselves staring down (well, being stared down by) an impressively sized black bull.

Before half a moment had passed, the bull broke his stare and bore toward them, and Nicholas and Danny turned in one synchronized motion to run. The bull was close behind them as they neared a brush-covered ditch at the bottom of the hill, and Danny took a quick look behind him, grabbed Nicholas, and flung the both of them down at a roll into the ditch. They heard the bull, seemingly thwarted by their sudden disappearance into the overhanging greenery, go tearing past overhead.

They lay face-to-face on their sides in the ditch, breathing hard. Nicholas grinned approvingly – and rather proudly – at Danny. “You’ve really become quite good, you know.”

Danny blushed, his face going an even brighter red than it had from the running. “Eh, well, I’ve learned from the best.” He smiled, meeting Nicholas’s eyes – then his gaze shifted down a bit. The glance lasted the barest of seconds before Danny looked away again, tilting his head as if to listen. “S’pose we’ve lost him?”

Time seemed to slow down for Nicholas, as he slotted that gesture of Danny’s into place in his mind – and realized with sudden clarity that it stood beside many others like it, others that his mind had been collecting and arranging and filing away without telling him. That peculiar glance down – not shy avoidance, but active interest in something. Something, Nicholas realized, somewhere in the vicinity of his mouth. (Or chin, some part of his mind tried to interject. Maybe you’ve got something on your chin. Nicholas ignored it.) But then there was always the sudden turn away, the change of subject, the distracting comment. Danny would go to get a DVD, or another beer, or a red pen to add the necessary splash of gore to one of his notebook doodles, and the moment would slip past Nicholas’s consciousness into that file at the back of his mind. (Because it’s not important, said that other little part of his mind. Let’s get back to the business at hand, shall we? Don’t go running off after butterflies when there’s work to be done. I think it was something about fences?)

Nicholas cleared his throat. “You’ve taught me a few things, too, you know.” Danny looked back at him, his expression curious and a little doubtful.

“Hm? Like what?”

“Well, you did finally teach me a little about switching off.”

Danny gave him a questioning look, so Nicholas decided to demonstrate. He placed a hand on Danny’s chest. He and Danny both looked at it.

“Erm. What’re you–?”

Nicholas felt his ears growing warm, but he soldiered on. “This.” And he tugged Danny a bit nearer, so that their noses were almost touching. He was just working himself up to the final approach when Danny’s face suddenly broke into his most delighted grin—the one usually reserved for tales of Nicholas’s Met days or those evenings when Nicholas was the one to pick out a favorite movie to watch.

“Ooh, so that’s it!” And he closed the distance between them, kissing Nicholas in an extremely enthusiastic and entirely enjoyable fashion. After a few long moments, during which Nicholas was glad of his time spent maximizing his ability to hold his breath, Danny paused briefly and rolled partly on top of Nicholas, reducing his lung capacity considerably. The feeling was not at all unwelcome, but—

"I'm not sure we sh–"

Danny paused just long enough in his attentions to grin down at Nicholas. "The farmer's coming. Hear him? I’m just making the most of the moment while I can, y’know.”

Nicholas was glad for the compression of his lungs, because otherwise he'd have been laughing (all right, giggling—but in an entirely masculine way) rather helplessly by now. As things stood, all he managed was a sort of hiccupping wheeze and a very bright grin. "You really are very good."

“Told ya,” Danny said near his ear. “Learned from the best.”

When Fred Cooper turned up a moment later, he was surprised to find Inspector Angel and Sergeant Butterman in extremely good cheer for two men who’d nearly been gored by Flora.

Nicholas was a bit taken aback. “Er – Flora? The bull’s name is Flora?”

“Stupid sod. She’s a cow, not a bull,” said Cooper indulgently.

“What d’you mean, he’s a cow? He has them enormous horns!”

“Danny Butterman, you grew up in these parts! Inspector Angel, city boy that he is, him I can understand being a right fool about things like telling bulls from cows. But you’re Sandford born and bred!”

Later, as they took their leave from Cooper, Danny leaned in toward Nicholas and muttered, “I don’t know about him, but when I see a big, snorting black thing with horns running at me – I don’t take the time for a quick peek between the legs.”

Nicholas rewarded this remark with one of his rare, genuine grins. After a moment, it changed in tone, growing a bit devilish. “Come on, what do you say we skip the pub tonight and see what we can come up with to keep ourselves amused on a night in?”

Danny pursed his lips. “Hmm. I did just pick up the newest Die Hard.”

Nicholas’s gait faltered a beat. Danny let him hang for a moment before giving him a slap on the back. “Nicholas Angel, after all we've been through, how can you fall for that?" Nicholas rolled his eyes at him, and Danny waited a beat. "We'll watch the new Die Hard after."

Aw, that was so cute!

After a few long moments, during which Nicholas was glad of his time spent maximizing his ability to hold his breath,

HEEEEEEEE. Of course. Doing underwater assault courses or yoga or learning to search gas-filled rooms... it's just what any normal officer in the pursuit of his duties would feel called upon to practice....

Exactly, he'd be remiss if he weren't maximizing his capability to handle any possible scenario. You never know when you're going to be called upon to rescue someone from a sinking car, etc... ;)

Thanks very much for the comment!

Can I have your name for when I put this quote on my profile? You can just e-mail it to me, if you like.

Oh, um, er, uh... actually, if you wouldn't mind, you can just use pandonkey. I'm a bit shy about popping out from behind the LJ ID in any fairly public way.

I live in the South. Many people up in hurr talk jsut liek dat.

So do I! (Er, live in the South, that is, not talk liek dat.) And I have no idea if that's anything close to a real rural-southern-British dialect, although apparently that dialect is related to American Southern.

Thank you so much for the detailed comment! I'm glad you enjoyed the story. :)

That last paragraph is absolutely hilarious. Beyond that, everyone else has said everything I liked already.

Yey for including the fact that Danny is constantly staring at Nicholas' mouth.

Oh, and devilish Nicholas for the win. : )

homoerotic adventures in a ditch!
This was so much fun to read, and so sweet. I will never get tired of stories which lead up to their first kiss. your description of the mouth-gazing thing, and Nicholas's recognition of it, were both perfectly in character. Your dialogue and the Nicholas thoughts bits were excellent, too.
Thanks for writing this. :)

homoerotic adventures in a ditch!

Oh, that would have been a much better title.

Thank you very much, I'm so glad you enjoyed and felt those moments were in character - I struggled quite a bit with that. I have yet to get tired of the first kiss stories yet, either - I've loved reading all of the different takes on it.

Thank you very much for the comment!

Awww, that was adorably sweet and fluffy! I love Nicholas's thought process about Danny looking at his 'chin' -(I explored that a bit in a fic of mine as well, it's just so...noticable!)

Anyway - this was just a real treat! I thought the characterization was terrific and the descriptions were really nicely done. Just such a charming and lovely feel overall! Thank you for sharing the fluffy goodness :)

Definitely adding this to memories! :)
